I’m not a crazy hardcore Star Wars fan, however I greatly enjoyed several storylines from the Expanded Universe, before Disney de-canonized it all. Yes I’m salty about that. In any case, I’ve modeled several lightsabers from a variety of characters now, and still add another one here and there. They are generally straightforward designs, though sometimes a particular detail or part can prove trickier to model. I have quite a few modeled or waiting to model that have not been printed yet but are on my to-do list.

Ahsoka
Technically this is two lightsabers, but who’s counting. They were both pretty straightforward to model. I print the base pommel separately and the rest of the saber standing up on the print bed, that way I can avoid splitting the saber and having a seam down the body.

Darth Maul

This was a fun one because, like Ahsoka, Darth Mauls technically has two sabers that can join together into his signature double bladed saber, and right from the start I wanted to replicate that functionality. The solution? Magnets! A couple of magnets imbedded into the end of each saber snap the two together or apart without needing a mechanical mechanism.

Darth Vader

Classic choice and fairly simple design. Quite similar to Anakin’s Attack of the Clones saber, but with more black, to go with his black outfit. I quite like the design for how straightforward it is, and it’s definitely one of the most iconic sabers out there.

Jocasta Nu

This one is a pretty niche design. If I didn’t tell you whose it is, you probably wouldn’t know. In case you’re wondering, Jocasta Nu is the Chief Librarian of the Jedi archives. The ribs in the center of the saber are an interesting addition, and the saber seems to have a very ceremonial design to it with the gold coloring that otherwise doesn’t pop up too often.

Qui Gon Jinn

This is definitely one of the sabers that fell into the “trickier than expected” category as it has the silver sheath that has to fit precisely around the black body. Ordinarily not a problem, except it has some fancy cutouts, plus the body has a lot of ribs designed into it. On top of that, the sheath goes most of the length of the saber so I originally ended up with no choice but to cut it in half for printing rather than simple separating it into parts, which is less ideal. With the bigger print bed of the Prusa XL this isn’t so much of a problem anymore.

Mara Jade

One of my favorite characters from the Expanded Universe. This saber was actually easier to model than I expected it to be, although the switch blocks initially gave me some pause to get it lined up properly with the rings underneath it.
