Your favorite fiction, brought to reality
One of my favorite things is creating unique props and accessories, either based on existing things or designing new things from scratch. I personally draw a lot of inspiration from games and fandoms in particular for my own projects, but if you have something else in mind I’m quite open to other things as well.
Process: The biggest thing to keep in mind is that 3D printing is not a magic “make anything” button and there are certain limitations to the manufacturing process. For example, due to the way objects are printed in layers, it is possible to make items translucent, but not completely clear. This is where 3D printing is often combined with other tools such as laser cutting or CNC machining. Complicated shapes are also harder to print, and often require additional material for support while printing.
Scale: Large items are impressive, and are easier to fit in fun things to such as electronics, and in particular, lights. However the printer bed space is a set size, which means larger items must be split into more individual parts. How this affects the overall object varies greatly. Additionally larger objects tend to cost significantly more to ship.
Largest bed size: 360x360x360mm
Time: This may or may not be an issue, however if you would like the item by a certain date, for instance for a birthday or to bring to an event, the more in advance it can be started the better, to account for the design process and testing. If you are unsure about an idea, contact me! I will be happy to work with you to see how a particular idea might work.
Pricing: The base cost for any item is dependent directly on a few factors
Material usage -This accounts for the largest portion of the base price and is set by weight
Print time -A function of both overall size and complexity (having multiple colors in a print for example).
Specialty filaments: See options below -typically these have a minimal impact on overall price unless there is a lot used
Electronics -LEDs, sounds, etc. typically add a flat increase to the base price of at minimum $25-30 each
Examples
24” base color light sword ~$50
Small handheld with lights ~$100
Specialty Options
Shiny metallic colors.
Wood-fill: Softer material, can be sanded or stained.
Small braille chess set ~$20
Glow-in-the-dark/florescent, works best under a blacklight.
Metal-fill: Iron fill can stick to a magnet or can be rusted in salt water to mimic age. Copper fill can be polished.
Large handheld with lights ~$250-300
Translucent: Will NOT be completely transparent, due to the layer lines from printing.
TPU -Semi-flexible rubber. Very durable, but less color options, a bit more expensive, and of course flexible.
Electronics
LED Lighting: Both simple color lighting and Digital RGB options are available.
Paintable helmet with lights ~$200
Leather handle wrappings.
Non-3D printed options -Still in early stages, but I want to expand my skills into other mediums like laser cutting acrylic, etc.
Triggered sound effects: Handy for pew-pew noises and the like.
